We attended Autosport International for the two trade days in early January and it was great to catch up with old friends and make new contacts. Although the show may not have quite re-captured the magic of the early ‘00s, there was plenty to see and, as a place to network and make plans for 2025, it was invaluable.
With bookings now being made for the first pre-season test sessions, we’ve included our suggestions in this newsletter to help you optimise your valuable track time. Having attended many test sessions, JB Data Engineering has extensive experience in planning test day programmes so we hope you find our guidance useful in preparing for your first laps of 2025.
Please call us on (44) 7717 562169 or email jordan@jbdataengineering.co.uk if you would like to discuss your season and book our services. We’d love to hear from you!
Maximise Your Test Day Performance with These Key Tips
As drivers and teams gear up for their first test sessions of the new season, preparation is crucial. Given the significant costs in getting a car to the circuit, JB Data Engineering has compiled six key recommendations to help you make your return to the track in 2025 as efficient and productive as possible.
1) Review Past Data and Footage
If this is your first session back since last season, check for any onboard video or data you can review in advance. Pay particular attention to your gear selection for each corner to refresh your memory and identify potential improvements.
2) Use a Simulator
If you have access to a simulator, spend time reacquainting yourself with the circuit. This will allow you to focus on car performance at the circuit rather than re-learning the track layout.

3) Account for Track Changes
Many MSV circuits undergo maintenance during the winter, often leading to resurfaced corners or entire sections of track. This means that your braking and throttle reference points may need adjustment, even if your gear selection remains the same.
4) Prepare a Circuit Map
Annotate a track map with gear selections before arriving at the circuit. Reviewing the map before heading out on-track will reinforce key points, allowing you to focus on specific corners as you build up speed. If you struggle with a particular section, cross-check your gear selection to ensure optimal performance.
5) Utilise Live Data Feedback
At offical Tests Days (not Track Days, where regulations differ), make the most of live data tools. If you’re using VBox equipment, enable the OLED display with live delta or use the live delta function for your chosen dash logger. For AiM devices, use the dash function or Solo 2 to monitor performance before and after each corner. If you’re losing time, highlight that section on your track map when you get back to the garage and focus on improving it throughout the session. Prioritising the biggest and easiest gains will boost your confidence and that will naturally lead to improved lap times.

6) Follow a Structured Test Plan
If you’re testing with a professional team, expect a structured plan. A typical day usually starts with an initial shake-down lap followed by four or five timed laps to get you reacquainted with the car. Your engineer will then collect feedback before you complete a race stint of around ten laps, leading to a data review and potential car adjustments. Many teams conduct qualifying runs in the early afternoon when the track is warm and quiet, before concluding with more race stints and a final review of the days results.
Remember: Consistency is key! Avoid focusing solely on outright lap times and instead aim for a steady, fast pace throughout your stints.
We hope these suggestions help you to maximise your test session. JB Data Engineering has extensive experience working with engineers and drivers to create effective test plans. If you’d like to benefit from our guidance to get the best from your day - whether as a team or a driver - please contact us on 00 (44) 7717 562169 to explore how we can help.
