2020 – A Year Of Challenge And Growth

Updated: Dec 22, 2020

As 2020 draws to a close, it’s time for JB Data Engineering to look back on a year that, in line with the rest of the world, presented huge challenges but at the same time, also offered many opportunities to develop, learn and make new contacts.

During the year, JB Data Engineering provided data support services to teams and drivers competing in the Dunlop Endurance Championship Organised by Britcar, the C1 Challenge, the European Le Mans Series, GT Cup and the 24 Hours of Le Mans. All in all, it was a very busy season! Let’s review some of the highlights…

EDF Motorsport – Dunlop Endurance Championship Organised By Britcar – #60 Seat Cupra TCR driven by Ashley Woodman / Martin Byford.

Working with EDF Motorsport and Ash and Martin driving the #60 Seat Cupra TCR was a lot of fun and a very satisfying campaign. Along with EDF we suggested the installation of the RaceLogic HD2 system to take the data from the Aim dash on the Cupra. This is a system that uses dual cameras on which can be overlaid data such as throttle, brakes, RPM and gears. Ash became very comfortable using data and we were able to help him find valuable seconds just by looking at the video output.

EDF Motorsport is a very effective team and provided excellent supported Ashley using set-up, data and coaching. By the end of the season,

Ashley had moved to within a second and a half of Martin and the pairing finished the 2020 season seventh overall in the championship and third in Class 4. During the year, they took four class podiums, including two class victories, and an overall third place at the opening race of 2020. JB Data Engineering very much enjoyed supporting EDF Motorsport and working with Ashley and Martin and we look forward to the opportunity to return in 2021.

EDF Motorsport / S2Smarts Racing – Dunlop Endurance Championship organised by Britcar - #52 Smart ForFour driven by Rob Baker and Jon Packer.

This was a fascinating project to be involved as the relationship between S2Smarts Racing and EDF Motorsport began at track day in 2019. Going into the 2020 season, the combination of a very supportive team in EDF Motorsport and an excellent co-driver in Jon Packer meant that Rob Baker could develop his driving skills to the point that he lapped within two seconds of his more experienced teammate.

Rob and Jon enjoyed numerous class and overall podium finishes in a highly competitive 2020 season for them and we hope to work with them again next year.

Algarve Pro Racing – European Le Mans Series / 24 Hours of Le Mans - #25 ORECA 07 - Gibson driven, at Le Mans, by John Falb, Simon Trummer and Matt McMurry.

Every motorsport professional competing in sportscars dreams of racing at the Circuit de la Sarthe so we were delighted to be offered the opportunity by Sam and Stuart Cox of Algarve Pro Racing to work with the team at selected European Le Mans Series races and the biggest event on the sportscar calendar – the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

Algarve Pro Racing is a fantastic team and it is a credit to Sam and Stuart that they are prepared to offer opportunities to relative newcomers to the industry.

The #25 ORECA finished fifth at the Le Castellet 240, piloted by John Falb, Simon Trummer and Gabriel Aubrey so the team was well prepared as we approached race week for the pandemic-delayed 88th running of the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

LMP2 Le Mans 24 Hour

Qualifying for the #25 car driver line-up of Falb, Trummer and 23-year-old American pilot Matt McMurry was frustrating with the trio starting 20th on the overall grid and 15th in class. The team worked exceptionally hard throughout the race and it was a great privilege to see the car come home 11th overall and seventh in the LMP2 class. The car finished first of the Pro-Am crews and John Falb took the fastest lap of the Bronze-graded drivers.

JB Data Engineering very much hopes to return to Le Mans in 2021 to build on this year’s amazing experience.

Amigo Motorsport – C1 Challenge at Donington – the #381 car driven by Mathew Dawson and Rhys Lloyd and the #380 car driven by Mark Thompson, Andrew Scott and Christian England.

The C1 Challenge was a fun event to be involved with and it was a great pleasure to work with Amigo Motorsport. The #380 Gala Performance car included 2019 United Autosport pilot Christian England in its driver line-up. it was a great to be invited to work with Amigo Motorsport at Donington. The team was grateful for the data input that we could provide and finished eighth and ninth. JB Data Engineering is looking forward to working with Amigo Motorsport is 2021.

Vinna Sport – Dunlop Endurance Championship organised by Britcar – the #27 Ginetta G40 driver by Charlotte Birch and Adriano Medeiras.

It was very satisfying to see how Charlotte Birch progressed throughout the 2020 Britcar Trophy Series. The pairing of Charlotte and Brazilian driver Adriano Medeiras worked exceptionally hard during the season with Adriano and the team using all the tools at their disposal, including data, to provide the best possible set-up for Charlotte. As the driver-coach, Adriano had a methodical and thoughtful approach to working through problems that worked well with the data that we could provide.

Vinna G40

After a season that included eight Class Six podiums and one overall podium, Charlotte and Adriano finished in an overall fourth place in the Trophy Series and runners-up in the T6 class – an excellent result and one that JB Data Engineering was proud to play its part.

Aston GT4

JB Data Engineering also worked with Whitebridge Motorsport and Steve Birt and Chris Murphy’s Aston Martin Vantage GT4. Again, this was an excellent example of teamwork and communication being used to identify and solve issues to make an already competitive car even quicker.

Aston GT3

Additionally, we supported Ultimate Speed’s #26 Aston Martin Vantage AMR GT3 driven by Michael Brown and Matt Manderson at the final round of the 2020 Intelligent Money British GT Championship at Silverstone. After qualifying 20th overall and 12th in the GT3 Pro-Am class, contact during the opening laps meant the car had to be retired. It was a frustrating end to an otherwise very positive weekend but we hope to work with Ultimate Speed again in the future.

Despite the season starting in the middle of the summer, JB Data Engineering had a full diary throughout the year and, on race weekends, missed out on a podium finish only once.

JB Data Engineering would like to offer its sincere gratitude to everyone who used our services in 2020 and we very much look forward to seeing you all on the grid in 2021!
